GNLA calls bandh over fake encounter

By Biplab Kr Dey

TURA, March 7 The Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) has called for a dawn-to-dusk bandh in the Garo Hills region on March 9 to protest against the alleged fake killing of the son of the Nokma of Origitok village by police.

Terming killings and harassment of villagers a routine affair, the outfit has demanded on the State Government to set up an independent inquiry into the killings. The outfit, however, called for an indefinite bandh call in Ampati constituency till the government meets the demands of the outfit.

Meanwhile, the killing of Sengbat Ch Marak, son of Nokma of Oragitok has been condemned by NGOs in East Garo Hills district including Garo Students Union (GSU), All India Garo Union (AIGU), Federation of Achik Freedom (FAF), Mothers Federation, AYF and ICDS terming it a personal vendetta.

The NGOs alleged the encounter in Romba Ading was fake and orchestrated by Circle Inspector Bitcheng Marak, who led the SWAT team. Alleging that a former cadre of Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) was part of the team, the NGOs questioned as to who authorised the use of the surrendered cadre in police operations.

It was not an encounter with a militant but a murder of an innocent person, said a press release today.
