GNLA area commander killed in Meghalaya

TURA, Jan 30 - Area commander of Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) Pangkam (Purno R Sangma) was killed in an encounter today between a joint team of East Garo Hills and West Khasi Hills police near Shallang village in West Khasi Hills.

According to police, acting upon information about presence of GNLA cadres, a joint operation was launched and the hideout raided. In the ensuing gun battle, Pangkam was killed in the encounter at about 8 am this morning.

Pangkam was the second in command to the EGH commander of the outfit, Jimmy (Ajan Momin). Police recovered one pistol, four mobiles, documents and seals along with a wireless set from the hideout.

Police stated that there were two more cadres along with Pangkam during the operation and one of them is believed to be seriously injured in the encounter. Search operations for the other two cadres is on.
