GMDA official arrested for demanding bribe

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, May 26 - A team from the vigilance and anti-corruption branch of the Assam Police today arrested Pradip Barman, an assistant engineer with the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) for demanding money in the name of building permission.

The official had demanded money for a ground plus one building, despite the process having been made online by GMDA in December last year.

Barman looks after one sector of the GMDA building permission section, and was allegedly troubling an applicant with an illegitimate demand of Rs 50,000, as per the complainant.

A meeting of the GMDA will be held tomorrow for suspending the arrested assistant engineer and an inter-departmental inquiry will also be conducted to look into the details of the complaint, said GMDA sources.

To ease the process for the people, the entire procedure was made online, so one need not visit the GMDA office for permission. Its a time-bound and foolproof arrangement to look into the building permission applications. Greater awareness among the applicants is also needed to avoid unnecessary trouble, added the sources.
