GMDA notice to builders for not acquiring occupancy certificate

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Jan 5 - Acting tough on builders and building owners not acquiring occupancy certificate for their completed buildings within the Guwahati Metropolitan Area (GMA), the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has issued notices to more than 100 builders to initiate action in this regard within January 31.

The GMDA observed that a good number of builders and building owners have occupied the buildings without obtaining the certificate from the GMDA or the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) which is in contravention with the building bylaws.

Mainly, a good number of flat buyers in the city are facing problems as their builders have not acquired occupancy certificate, which is mandatory on completion of any building. As a number of such buildings have been constructed violating all the building bylaws, the builders and owners avoid initiating the process of acquiring the certificate, GMDA sources said.

The action has been taken to redress the grievances of thousands of flat buyers, who are facing problems due to this.

Every day, we are sending notices to 5-6 such builders. January 31 has been fixed as a deadline for such buildings defying the norms. We have already started getting response from the builders after the notices were served, the sources added.

The GMDA will initiate penal action against the builders and owners not responding to the notices as per building bylaws and the GMDA Act 1985. The action includes sealing the building and even demolition.
