GMC workers strike from April 23

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, April 19 Workers of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) will go on a two-day strike on April 23-24 to protest against non-fulfilment of their long-standing demands including implementation of pension, recruitment of staff on compassionate grounds and regularisation of daily wage workers.

In a statement, Dinanath Basfor, acting coordinator of the united front of four workers unions of GMC, said that despite repeated demands the State government and the civic body had failed to accede to the issues raised by the staff.

The unions said that water supply to residents of the city has been kept out of the purview of the strike.

The two-day strike will be followed by an indefinite strike from May 12, said the statement.

The four unions that have jointly called the agitation are, Guwahati Municipal Karmi Sangh, All Assam Harijan Mazdoor Union, Harijan Mazdoor Union and Water Supply Karmi Sangh.
