GUWAHATI, Aug 20 - The workers and employees of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) represented by four unions today resorted to a strike protesting against the State Government�s �apathy� to its genuine, long-standing demands, especially the one concerning pension for its workers and employees.
The unions said in a statement that despite repeated representations made to the State Government and despite intimating it about the unions� decision to go on an indefinite strike from August 20, the Government paid no heed to the workers� demands.
The employees and workers of the GMC had alleged that despite the budgetary allocation of Rs 75 crore, out of the required Rs 130 crore, for the pension of the municipal employees and workers, and the GMC too assuring in writing to contribute Rs 55 crore to this end, the State Cabinet has failed to approve the allocation.
This is despite the required approval of the State Finance Department, said a statement issued by the Joint Platform of the Four Employees and Workers� Unions of the GMC.
The Joint Platform said that this has led to the present agitation of the GMC employees and workers. This time, even the essential services like water supply will not be exempted from the purview of the strike, it warned.
