By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, March 29 - Leaving the car parked on the roadside during the night might cost dearly to the vehicle owners of Guwahati, with the Guwahati Municipal Corporation planning to launch a crackdown on such vehicles from April 1.

The big and small garages, where vehicles are kept on roadside for months together, would specially be targeted under this drive in the city.

This step has been planned keeping in mind the growing security concern in all the cities of the country. The unguarded vehicles kept on the roadside might be misused by the antisocial elements for carrying out subversive activities. Moreover, roads are not supposed to be used as a parking spot for night, said S Thiek, additional commissioner, GMC.

Outside the garages too, vehicles are kept lined up on the roads, in the name of repairing, which would also be removed during this drive. Many lanes and by-lanes of the city are congested due to this, creating problem for other people, he mentioned.

The corporation has asked the garage and vehicle owners to make arrangement for their vehicles in night. City buses, autorickshaws and school buses parked on the roadside would also be removed during the crackdown.

At places, such vehicles are used for unsocial gatherings. Moreover, vehicle theft cases are also increasing in the city. Thus, an immediate step is required to tackle these problems. The conscious citizens of our society should support us in this drive, he added.
