GMC refutes meat sellers allegations

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Feb 18 - Refuting allegations of substandard quality of meat and inadequate supplies from newly started government slaughter house, Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has said that the apart from ensuring hygienic meat supply as per the Supreme Court guidelines, the slaughter house has the capacity to fulfil the citys demands.

Unhappy with the outcome of the government-run abattoir in Khanapara, a section of meat sellers have expressed dissatisfaction at the services being offered to them, replacing the prevalent mechanism of slaughter and sale of meat by the vendor themselves. The government abattoir that belongs to the Assam Livestock and Poultry Corporation Ltd has a capacity of slaughtering about 4,500 goats per day.

If required, the capacity can be increased further. We have such provisions in place. However, as per our market survey, the daily requirement of Guwahati and its adjacent places is 2,200 to 2,500 goats per day. Thus the question of inadequate supplies does not arise. The only condition is to place the demand well on time, GMC Veterinary Officer Pradip Medhi told The Assam Tribune. To ensure the quality, we ensure the inspection of animal both before and after slaughtering, he added.

The slaughter house is further being developed with a capacity to slaughter 400 pigs and 16,000 poultry per day. Following the SC order and the 2012 GMC by-law, this initiative to supply meat only through the government abattoir has been taken to ensure hygienic meat and painless killing. We have had many complains about the open sale of mutton, in unhygienic condition. It will further ensure a reasonable rate parity in the market, sources said.
