GMC garbage dumping ground at Boragaon a serious health hazard

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Feb 20 For the residents of the Boragaon area, the garbage dumping ground of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has become a serious threat to the health and hygiene of the people of the area.

While the residents are complaining that the unscientific garbage dumping procedure has created serious heath hazards for the local residents, the GMC authorities believe that the problem would be solved once the manure and power generating plant becomes operational in the area.

The local people, however, feel that the plant would add to their problems, as the garbage disposal system is not properly supervised by the authorities.

Our days start with the sight of the filth and heaps of garbage, and the repulsive smell emanating from the stink keeps coming during the nights also. More dangerous are the unseen microorganisms, which would spread in the environment and contaminate air and water, Maheswar Deka, a school teacher and a local resident, said.

Noticing the frequent spread of diseases like breathing problem, skin ailments, bacterial infections, etc, the matter was taken seriously by the residents, who filed their objection to the GMC authorities and also the district administration, but action is still awaited on their part.

The serious nature of the problem demands immediate attention as it affects our health, hygiene and living environment directly and very badly. Delaying action on this issue is like exposing more and more people to serious health hazards, Anjali Kalita, a housewife, complained.

However, refuting the allegation of lack of supervision, a senior GMC official said that the private agency engaged for the purpose had been strictly instructed to dump the municipal waste within the specific area chosen for the purpose. The work is being constantly supervised and as the manure and power plant would be fully operational in the area, it would further help in maintaining hygiene, he added.
