GUWAHATI, Nov 3 - The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) today blamed the PWD and the Jal Board over many nonfunctional streetlights in the city.
Reacting to a news item published in this newspaper on the inconvenience caused to the people due to the nonfunctional streetlights in many areas of the city, the GMC said that sometimes many streetlights become nonfunctional mainly due to the damage done to the power cables during road construction works carried out by the PWD, while digging up the roads for laying water pipelines by the Jal Board, and also due to road accidents that cause damage to electrical poles.
In a statement, the GMC said that tender has already been floated for repair and maintenance of streetlights on all the main roads.
Estimates for repair and maintenance of streetlights are being prepared and tender will be floated soon. Further, to speed up the maintenance process, the GMC is procuring vehicle-mounted hydraulically operated ladders. Supply order for one such ladder has already been placed and more such vehicles will be procured soon, the GMC said. The statement further said the GMC is constantly responding to public complaints reported through helpline numbers and the control room.
