GMC asked to shift dumping ground

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, March 23 To preserve the ecological balance of the Deepor Beel, the Kamrup Metro district administration has directed the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) to shift the land-filling site and dumping ground for Solid Waste Management at Paschim Boragaon within three months.

... it has been felt that the dumping of municipal solid wastes at close proximity at Boragaon by the GMC has pushed the wetlands pollution to alarming levels. The problem gets aggravated during the monsoons, with rainwater sweeping large amounts of garbage from the dumping site to the Beel. This dumping site is also adversely affecting the natural flow of water as well as the ecological balance of the entire area and also blocking the flow of water from other areas of the city creating a situation like artificial flood inundating large areas in and around Guwahati city, said an order issued by Dr M Angamuthu, Deputy Commissioner of Kamrup Metro.

It said that there is an immediate necessity for shifting of the land-filling site away from Deepor Beel to prevent further ecological degradation of the Beel.

... feel an immediate necessity to direct GMC to shift the land-filling site for Solid Waste Management to any alternative suitable place within three months, the order added.

The order has been made as per relevant sections of the Disaster Management Act, 2015.

The district administrations latest order comes a few days after it prohibited earth filling and construction activities in and around Deepor Beel.
