GMC acts tough on errant engineers, contractors

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, April 21 - Acting tough on the contractors entrusted with the work of de-silting and cleaning the drains of Guwahati, the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has filed FIRs against the contractors Pankaj Deka and Dewan Haidar Ali for their failure to carry out de-siltation and drain cleaning works in their areas under Chandmari and Latasil police stations respectively.

While Deka was arrested by the police today, Assistant Engineer of the GMC Division C Paresh Thakuria was suspended and Executive Engineer Akbar Ali has been issued showcause notice for their failure to monitor the works done by the contractors.

The total cost of contract is Rs 38 crore, of which Rs 19.5 crore has already been given to the contractors. We noticed anomalies in the cleaning work last year also. This led to waterlogging in several areas of the city after every rainfall. As the three-year contract expires in October this year, the contractors cannot get away with public money without completing the work, said GMC Mayor Mrigen Sarania.

It may be mentioned that altogether 30 contractors had been allotted work for cleaning and de-silting the municipal drains in Guwahati.

We would be carrying out inspections in all the areas of Guwahati and action will be taken against any incomplete of substandard work. The GMC officials, not supervising the work properly will also not be spared, he added.
