Glowing tributes paid to Sahityarathi on his 157th birth anniversary

MORIGAON, Oct 14 - The 157th birth anniversary of Sahityarathi Lakhminath Bezbaroa was observed here at Morigaon today under the auspices of Morigaon district unit of the Asam Sahitya Sabha. The centrally-organised programme started with the hoisting of the Asam Sahitya Sabha flag by Pratap Hazarika, president, Morigaon Zila Sahitya Sabha. This was followed by smriti tarpan offered by Bubumoni Goswami, former president of the Morigaon Zila Sahitya Sabha. The bust of Sahityarathi Lakhminath Bezbaroa constructed at a cost of 2.5 lakh rupees at the Morigaon Sahitya Sabha ground was formally unveiled by Jadav Sarma, secretary general, Asam Sahitya Sabha. The function was also attended by Leena Das, Deputy Commissioner, Morigaon. On the other hand, the open stage constructed at the Morigaon Sahitya Sabha ground was formally inaugurated by Harendra Bora, former president, Morigaon Zila Sahitya Sabha.

The open meeting held on the occasion was presided over by Pratap Hazarika, president, Morigaon Zila Sahitya Sabha. Speaking as the chief guest in the meeting, Jadav Chandra Sarma, said that it is a historic day for Assam and Assamese nationality as the doyen of Assamese language and literature was born on October 14, 1864 on a boat at Ahotguri in Morigaon district when his Magistrate father Dinanath Bezboruah was travelling from Nagaon to Guwahati across the Kopili river. The Assamese people must pay respects to late Sahityarathi who shaped Assamese language and literature, Sarma added. He further said Lakhminath showed the way of self reliance to the Assamese youth as he did timber business at Sambalpur, Orissa between 1921-24.

Meanwhile, the Sahityarathi Lakhminath Bezbaroa Smriti Rakhya Samiti also organised a day-long colourful programme today at Ahotguri, Morigaon on his birthday.
