Glaucoma 2nd largest cause of blindness

GUWAHATI, March 10 - According to a World Health Organization report, glaucoma is the second largest cause of irreversible blindness all over the world. Early diagnosis of the disease with appropriate medical intervention can prevent visual loss. To create awareness about glaucoma among the masses, �Glaucoma Week� is observed worldwide every year and this year it is being observed from March 6 to 12 by Glaucoma Society of India, the apex body of the glaucoma specialists of the country, in conjunction with the World Glaucoma Association.

As part of the various programmes and activities undertaken, a �Walk for Glaucoma� has been organised all over the country.

Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya on its part, is also observing the �Glaucoma Week�. It organised �Awareness Walk for Glaucoma� in Guwahati city and Sonapur. In Guwahati the walk started from Ganesh Uddyan (Ganesh Mandir Field), Ganeshguri and culminated at Shraddhanjali Kanan, opposite State Zoo on RG Baruah Road.

The walk was flagged off by Dr Anjan Jyoti Choudhury from Ganesh Mandir Uddyan at 8:30 am. Noted actress of the Assamese film industry Barsha Rani Bishaya was the chief guest. Around 400 people comprising doctors and staff of Nethralaya and members and representatives from other hospitals and institutions, various local non-governmental organisations, school students, social welfare organisations, trade and business houses, besides other individuals took part in the walk.

The participants in the walk held display banners and placards containing awareness messages about glaucoma and wore special caps for the occasion.
