Girl tops ranks after script re-evaluated

GUWAHATI, Jan 20 � On re-evaluation of answer-scripts, Devaroopa Sharma (Roll S-11609 No-0079) of Cotton College secured the first class first position in Statistics (Major) in the BSc (final) examination-2011 of Gauhati University, with a percentage of 86.9 and an aggregate of 869 marks.

She has now also secured the highest aggregate marks amongst the successful candidates in the Major course for the BSc (final) examination of 2011.

Prior to the reassessment of her answer-scripts, she was placed in the first class second position with an aggregate of 852 marks. Her two papers, i.e., Paper 3.1 and paper 3.3, were re-evaluated, resulting in addition of 17 marks.

Devaroopa is daughter of Dr Dilip Sharma, Associate Professor of Mathematics, Cotton College, and Dr Manjula Devi, Professor of Sanskrit, Gauhati University.

It may be mentioned that Devaroopa had secured the eighth position in the Higher Secondary (Arts) examination (conducted by the Assam Higher Secondary Education Council) in 2008 with highest marks in Computer Science and Applications.

There have been a number of instances in recent years where aggrieved candidates got justice after having their answer-scripts re-evaluated. Conscious circles feel that the developments strongly point towards anomalies in the answer-script evaluation process in different examinations right from the High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) to higher levels.
