Girl student death case: 24-hour Manipur bandh on Wednesday

By NEWMAI NEWS

IMPHAL, July 24: With the protest demanding justice over the controversial death of a 14-year-old girl student in her hostel room a few days ago gaining momentum, a 24-hour Manipur bandh will be imposed on Wednesday.

According to a press release of the JAC Against The Mysterious Death of Ningthoujam Babysana Chanu, the bandh began at 6 am on Wednesday and will end at 6 am of July 25.

The minor student of Class-VII at Standard Robarth Higher Secondary School in Imphals Canchipur was found hanging in her hostel room.

Alleging foul play, the family with the support of locals of Thangmeiband area where the girl hailed from have been pressing the state government to investigate into the case and punish the culprits.

While seeking support of the people, student bodies and civil society organisations for successful observation of the bandh, the JAC alleged that the state government failed to translate the assurance it had given to the JAC.

The JAC claimed that during a meeting with the leaders of the JAC, the chief minister assured of taking up appropriate action to investigate into the controversy surrounding the death of the girl. However, no positive action was taken up by the government even as the deadline set by the JAC expired on Tuesday, the JAC alleged.
