TURA, Aug 3 - In a truly heroic last act, a 13-year-old girl from the village of Resubelpara in North Garo Hills (NGH) saved a friend who was about to fall through a dangerously fast waterfall, before she tragically fell into the water and drowned.

The incident took place yesterday afternoon at about 2:30 pm when the girl along with at least 3 of her friends went to the waterfall by the Daram Gurakol stream near the village of Rongkuchong.

The heroic girl, identified as Mima Patiasa K Sangma, saw one of her friends lose her balance. Without thinking for her own safety, she reached out and saved her friend. Unfortunately, while trying to do so, she too lost her balance and fell into the river.

Her body was recovered from the river later and handed over to the family after post mortem was conducted, said Superintendent of Police, NGH, Abraham T Sangma.

As per locals, the current in the river was extremely strong with rocks protruding along the path of the waterfall as well in most parts of the river which may have led to her death.

Many residents of the district, while condoling her death praised her brave act.

We are extremely proud of her act of sacrificing her life to save another. Our thoughts are with her family at this moment of tragedy. Her sacrifice has not gone in vain as she has let one of her friends live, said Resubelpara resident Rinaldo K Sangma.
