Girl meets watery grave in Hailakandi, body recovered

HAILAKANDI, April 5 - The body of a 13-year-old girl named Soma Das was fished out from the Dholeswari river here today.

The victim was the daughter of Bipul Das of Gharmura village under Ramnathpur Police Station.

Soma had gone out with her mother and sister to fetch water from the Dholeswari river when the tragedy struck on Saturday.

Following a frantic call of drowning at around 2:26 pm on Saturday, Hailakandi Fire and Emergency Services Station personnel rushed to Garmura near the forest office. SDRF personnel and fire fighters too rushed to the spot. Deep divers from Silchar also joined in.

Search teams called off the efforts in the evening due to fading light. The search operation was resumed today morning, thus leading to recovery of the body.

The SO, F&ESS of Hailakandi, Albert I Khobung informed that the body of the drowning victim has been sent to the SK Roy Civil Hospital for post mortem.
