GHADC polls likely on Aug 10

By Correspondent

TURA, May 23 After much delay, the election to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) is tentatively set to be held on August 10. A final announcement is expected in a few days.

The delay has been a major issue in the Garo Hills region. The State Government had been delaying the elections on the premise that an amendment to the Sixth Schedule was due.

The National Peoples Party (NPP) has been strongly opposed to the extension of the GHADC tenure, terming it unconstitutional.

In a recent meeting between the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and the ANVC and ANVC (B), both groups had insisted on elections to the Council as the amendment to the Sixth Schedule would take time.

Meanwhile, NPP legislator James K Sangma said that his party welcomed the move for holding GHADC elections on August 10.
