GHADC clarifies on fund misuse allegations

By Correspondent

TURA, Nov 24 - Facing huge criticism over allegations of fund misuse, the Garo Hills Progressive Alliance (GHPA), clarified on the use of the Rs 100.71 crore Special Plan Assistance (SPA) provided by the Centre to Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) for the overall development of Garo Hills.

The GHPA-led alliance reiterated their stand on non-disclosure of information on the fact that the opposition MDCs had filed a case and as such the matter was sub-judice. However, the GHPA stated that it was willing to provide information if sought under RTI.

Speaking to the media at a press conference, Deputy CEM, Augustine Marak claimed that over 886 projects worth over Rs 102 crore are being earmarked. The GHPA has been under fire over the implementation of projects with allegations of money meant for development being individually distributed amongst MDCs.

Angered over information not being provided, the GSU and FAF are staging protests. Two NGOs are also filing RTIs seeking information on details of fund use. Deputy CEM, Augustine Marak said, We cannot give any documents and replies to the allegations since the matter is already in the High Court after the opposition MDCs filed a case. The case is sub-judice now, he said.

The Central funding of Rs 100.71 crore will be utilised for these projects with the remaining amount being adjusted from the Council funds, said Augustine.
