GUWAHATI, April 15 - A geographers� meet on the occasion of annual academic session of North-East India Geographical Society (NEIGS) was held at Pragjyotish College here recently with a day-long programme under the auspices of its Department of Geography.
�The main objective of the event was to provide a platform for young researchers in geography to present their research works pertaining to different fields of geography. The programme was attended by senior geographers, young researchers and students,� a statement said.
While delivering the inaugural address, Dulal Chandra Goswami, retired professor and head of the Department of Environmental Science of Gauhati University, emphasized that passion for knowledge, dedication and inquisitiveness for unearthing truth are the basic requirements for quality research.
The chief guest Dr Phani Deka, retired general manager, NEDFi, urged upon the young geographers to undertake research works which have practical relevance and utility in the present context. He also emphasised that the geographers can contribute significantly in carrying out impact studies for proper planning and execution of various projects for development.
According to the statement, research papers numbering twenty-two dealing with diverse research problems were presented in two technical sessions. The papers relating to urban sprawl, resource utilisation, livelihood issues, urban development problems, ethnic conflicts, agarwood cultivation and trading, indigenous irrigation system, agricultural practices among char dwellers, problem of human habitation in riverine area, issues of transgender and river bank migration were presented in the first technical session chaired by Professor R Barman and co-chaired by Dr NR Kalita.
In the second session chaired and co-chaired by Professor AK Bora and Dr M Gopal Singha, the works dealing with TV crime shows, fear of crime among women, changing religious composition, tea garden labourers, tourism development in Pabitora Wildlife Sanctuary, elderly population, changing age-specific literacy scenario, rural women in agriculture, hydrological aspects of the Barnadi River, patterns of urbanization and women volunteers in women NGOs were presented.
