GC Langthasa passes away

GUWAHATI, Feb 3 - Former Deputy Chief Minister and a senior leader of the Congress party, Gobinda Chandra Langthasa died at a city hospital around 1:30 am today due to old age ailments. He was 86.

Born on January 23, 1930, Langthasa joined politics in 1962 and represented Haflong in the State Assembly between 1984 and 2016 continuously.

Langthasa, who remained loyal to the Congress till his death, served as a strong bridge between the people of Dima Hasao (erstwhile North Cachar Hills) and the plains of Assam. He was appointed Deputy Chief Minister by the then Chief Minister late Hiteswar Saikia in 1991.

His wife predeceased him. Two of his five sons were killed by militants, while another died a natural death. He leaves behind two sons and three daughters.
