Gautam Roy not under suspension: Ripun Bora

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, June 22 - Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Ripun Bora on Saturday clarified that the State wing of the Congress has not placed former minister Gautam Roy under suspension.

The party has served a show-cause notice only on the former minister over his reported anti-party activities during the Lok Sabha elections, Bora said.

The APCC president appealed to Roy to send his reply on the show-cause notice if he (Roy) is willing to remain a member of the Congress.

It needs mention here that a section of the former ministers supporters are reportedly agitating in Hailakandi. These supporters have also been resorting to locking up the Hailakandi District Congress office, staging dharnas and burning effigies of the APCC president for the past several days.

The APCC president regretted that though it was expected from Roy, a senior leader of the Congress, that he would send a reply on the show-cause notice, he has so far not done so. He did not avail the scope to defend himself against the charges.

Against this backdrop, the matter has been referred to the partys highest authority. But the Congress high command is yet to make its stand known. Moreover, the matter has also been referred to the APCC disciplinary committee. Both the Congress high command and the APCC disciplinary committee are expected to take their decisions after threadbare discussions.

Unfortunately, Roy has engaged a section of his supporters to agitate against the party leadership even as the party is yet to take any decision on his matter, Bora said.

He reminded that Roy was elected on a Congress ticket as an MLA consecutively for three decades since 1985. His father was also an MLA on a Congress ticket. His son and wife also got elected to the State Assembly on Congress tickets. Roy was made a minister too for quite a long time by the Congress.
