GAURIPUR, July 24 - Incessant rains for the last 72 hours has caused havoc in greater Gauripur area and the flood victims taking shelter in relief camps have not been able to leave the camps as their houses remain submerged. The roads and drains are full of garbage. Normal life in the entire town has been paralysed. Though the water level of the Brahmaputra, Gangadhar and Gadadhar are receding but the people of the entire area apprehend a second wave of flood.
Though the inmates of the relief camps have been provided relief, it is not sufficient to meet their needs, they alleged. The stagnant rain water is severely polluted and most of the flood victims are suffering from skin diseases. The municipal authority has failed to clean the drains and remove accumulated garbage in many areas of the town and as a result, the situation may turn from bad to worse in the days to come. The condition of the domestic animals is beyond description as there is no highland for them to graze and there is acute shortage of fodder. Prices of essential commodities and vegetables are rising alarmingly.
