Garo villagers stage protest against absence of doctors

By Correspondent

TURA, June 15 - Angered by the frequent absence of doctors and medical staff at the Allagre Community Health Centre (CHC), hundreds of local villagers staged a protest march on Friday. The protest came amid allegations that most doctors do not stay at the CHC and commute from Tura.

The Allagre CHC has been in the news after a woman from Simkalanggre village was detected with Japanese Encephalitis. The CHC is located on the way to Chokpot in South Garo Hills, but lies inside the border of West Garo Hills district.

The villagers also took up the matter with the Garoland State Movement Committee, Ashugre unit.

During the protest, village elders, students and NGO leaders marched from Rimrangpara to the Allagre CHC, carrying banners. The public alleged that the entire medical staff is seldom present in the hospital and even night emergencies are left unattended to.
