TURA, July 16 - The 97th Labour Corps Day was observed on Saturday at the Cenotaph in Babupara here in memory of the Garo martyrs who sacrificed their lives in France in service of the Allied Forces who fought against the German soldiers during the First World War in 1914. There were 500 Garo people who went to France to help the British in the First World War.

The programme organised by Tura Municipal Board (TMB) was participated by political leaders, government officials, Church leaders, senior citizens, school students and the general public.

North Tura MLA Noverfield R Marak speaking as the chief guest recounted the valuable sacrifices of Garo forefathers who lost their lives in France fighting against the Germans. He urged the present generation to follow in the footsteps of the forefathers and to do their part to serve the motherland.

Earlier, wreaths were placed by dignitaries at the cenotaph and a guard of honour presented. A two minute silence was also observed in respect to the departed martyrs.
