Garo Hills shutdown peaceful

By Correspondent

TURA, March 3 - The shutdown of business establishments called in the Garo Hills today, passed off peacefully with no incident of violence reported from any part of the region.

The shutdown was called by four organisations including the GSU, FKJGP, ADE and AYWO, in protest against the killing of a KSU member at Ichamati under the Shella constituency in East Khasi Hills as well as to oppose the Citizenship (Amendment) Act. The bandh enforcers also raised the demand for implementation of the inner line permit (ILP) regime in Meghalaya.

The business shutdown began at 9 am and ended at 4 pm. However, vehicles plied on the roads, and schools and offices functioned normally during the shutdown period.

There was no untoward incident across the district and the shutdown passed off peacefully, confirmed West Garo Hill SP Dr MGR Kumar.
