Garo Hills NGO issues ultimatum

By Correspondent

TURA, July 16 - Achik Students Welfare Association (ASWA) on Thursday issued a seven-day ultimatum to Meghalaya Government to release the scholarship for the students of West Garo Hills (WGH) for the year 2012-13 and 2014-15.

We are compelled to issue the ultimatum to Education Minister Dr RC Laloo for disbursing the scholarship, said ASWA vice president Sengsrang Ch Marak.

The ultimatum follows several memoranda submitted to the authorities including Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma on the issue of scholarship disbursement. Our demand to disburse the scholarship is still not fulfilled, added additional general secretary of ASWA Karbeston Sangma.

We do not trust the State Governments claim that the Government of India has not sanctioned enough funds to release the scholarship. If the students from other NE States are getting it regularly every year, how is it possible that the Centre will not sanction funds for the students of Meghalaya? questioned Karbeston.

The students body further pointed out that it was only students of WGH who were being deprived of their rightful scholarships. ASWA has threatened to launch a protest if their demand for scholarship release was not met.
