Garage owner caught red-handed taking bribe

GUWAHAT, June 7 - A garage owner of Khudrapalaha village in Baihata Chariali was today caught red-handed by the anti-corruption and vigilance sleuths while he was accepting a bribe of Rs 15,000 from a truck driver on the pretext of influencing police.

The accused was identified as Niranjan Bhuyan. The truck driver, Md. Bipul Ahmed, hails from the same village. The accused had demanded a bribe of Rs. 50,000 from the complainant to influence the Officer-In-Charge, Baihata Chariali Police Station SI Pankaj Das. Today, the complainant was to pay the first installment of the total bribe amount.

The complainant had approached the anti-corruption police station in the Directorate of Vigilance & Anti-Corruption, Assam, Guwahati and a trap was laid down as per standard procedure.

The role of the police officer in charge of Baihata police station is also being investigated.

The accused Niranjan Bhuyan was trying to act as middleman and had threatened the complainant that he has to pay the amount to save the complainant from arrest in the case of a vehicle theft in which the complainant was being falsely implicated, as per the version of the complainant.

The accused has been arrested and will be forwarded to the Chief Judicial Magistrate tomorrow morning, officials said.
