MANGALDAI, June 16 - Men in uniform from Dalgaon Police Station in Darrang district today arrested a gaonburha (village headman) of Darrang Bazaar on charges of issuing fake birth certificates.
Police produced the arrested village headman identified as Sirajul Haque(50) before the court, which remanded him to judicial custody.
Earlier, police led by Additional Superintendent of Police (HQ) Darrang Suman Chakraborty carried out investigation into the matter of fake birth certificates on the basis of a complaint filed in Dalgaon Police Station by an Additional Deputy Commissioner of Darrang after many birth certificates submitted along with NRC applications as proof of citizenship by birth were found doubtful.
It has been alleged that the fake certificate supplying racket illegally collected a huge sum of money through the corrupt practice of charging am amount of Rs 400 against each such fake birth certificate.
Police has already registered a case in this connection and further investigation is on to find out other members of the notorious racket.
