JORHAT, Oct 2 - The Jorhat district administration today observed the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi with the Jorhat Deputy Commissioner Roshni A Korati flagging off Fit India Plogging Run (Run for a Plastic Free India) in the morning at the Jorhat Court Field in presence of senior district and police officials.

Additional Deputy Commissioner Dr Jayanta Goswami and Jorhat Superintendent of Police VC Nimbalkar were among those who were present on the occasion.

A large number of people including students participated in the run. Later, a meeting was held at the Gandhi Park on the occasion.

Rajya Sabha MP Kamakhya Prasad Tasa along with Korati, Nimbalkar and other officials paid floral tributes at the statue of Mahatma Gandhi at the park.

Meanwhile, the Jorhat district administration by an order issued on Monday, has prohibited manufacture, stocking, sale and use of plastic bags having diameter below 60 mm and below 50 microns thickness with immediate effect.

A district administration source stated that the administration has also prohibited the use of chlorine-added banners, flex, flags and buntings and also thermocol.

The source said that the prohibitions were imposed for protection of environment and to prevent clogging of drains and streams in the district, which results in artificial floods.
