Gandhi Jayanti observed

GUWAHATI, Oct 2 � The 142nd Gandhi Jayanti was observed with due solemnity in the State along with the rest of the country today.

In the city too, several functions were held in honour of the Father of the Nation where speakers stressed the need for practising Gandhian values

for a peaceful and progressive society.

The Kasturba Gandhi National Memorial Trust, Sarania, observed the day with a daylong programme. People thronged the spot since morning hours to pay their homage to Gandhiji on his 142nd birth anniversary. Community prayer, Geeta path, sutra yajna, community safai (cleanliness drive), etc., were some of the highlights of the day. Some members of the Trust also undertook cleanliness drives near the Ulubari flyover together with volunteers from other organizations.

The Khadi and Gramodyog Board of Assam paid homage to Gandhiji with a day-long programme. Speaking at the open session of Gandhi Jayanti, Social Welfare Minister Akon Bora appealed to the people of Assam to love and work for all-round development of the State following the teachings of Gandhiji.

He said that when the whole world had recognized the contributions of Gandhiji, now it was the duty of every Indian to follow the path of non-violence (ahimsa), peace and dedication as shown by the noble soul throughout his life.

Presiding over the meeting, chairman of Khadi and Gramodyog Board of Assam, Jay Kumar Jain said that it was high time for every citizen to work for nation building by following the path shown by Gandhiji. �

Earlier, additional chief executive officer of the Board, Mukul Hazarika, in his welcome address, highlighted various schemes of the Board to implement the vision of Mahatma Gandhi in the State. The daylong programme included a community sutra yajna, singing of Ramdhun and bhajan.

The Gandhi Mandap atop the Sarania hill also hosted a function held under the aegis of the Kamrup (Metro) district administration. Tributes were paid to the Father of the Nation, with speakers recollecting his role in the country�s Freedom Struggle as well as its national life.

The Panbazar Block Youth Congress also observed the day with an elaborate programme. Several speakers recollected the contributions of Gandhiji in the meet. Awareness drives against smoking, drug addiction and violence also marked the day.
