Fresh windstorm hits Manipur

IMPHAL, April 17 - The windstorm which hit Manipur on April 15 and claimed the lives of three women, returned on Wednesday and created more damages in several parts of the State.

The windstorm accompanied by thunder and lightning hit the State around 6.30 am. Roofs of several houses were blown away forcing people to shift to safer places. However, there is no report of any human casualty so far.

Additional Chief Secretary in-charge MH Khan inspected Bishnupur and Kakching districts which were severely damaged by the windstorm on April 15.

During his tour he also distributed cheques to the families of victims who died and sustained injuries, according to official sources.

Relief materials were also distributed to families whose houses were damaged and currently taking shelter in relief camps.

According to official sources in Churachandpur, around 2,004 households in 199 villages were affected in yesterday�s storm. Another 1,000 households under Kakching district were also affected.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Commissioners concerned have launched a survey to ascertain the extent of damages to schools which would serve as polling stations for the election to Inner Manipur Lok Sabha seat.
