DIPHU, Sept 18 - Reports of a group of people from Meghalaya crossing over the border with Assam and carrying out activities in Tahpat village of West Karbi Anglong, thereby violating all border norms maintained by the two States, has led to apprehension among the people of the area.

The place of the incident is near the inter-state border, around 32 km from Hamren Police Station. According to locals, the people from Meghalaya belonging to the Khasi-Pnar community walked along the PMGSY road on their way to Tahpat village and wrote Lapang-ap area on trees, rocks and culverts.

The locals alleged that the migrant group from Meghalaya has also illegally captured a vast area of agricultural land inside Karbi Anglong. These people are also allegedly exploiting natural resources like herbs, trees and other resources of the forest. They were allegedly seen transporting the herbs across the Assam-Meghalaya border.

Residents of Tahpat alleged that they have repeatedly apprised the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council and Assam government about the cross-border issue and urged both the authorities to act strictly on the issue and try to reach a solution, but nothing has been done.

The people of the area have now requested the establishment of a full-fledged police station at Khanduli to stop intrusion into Assam.

Infrastructure development: Assam University, Diphu Campus will soon get some basic infrastructure necessary for a higher educational institution. Pro Vice Chancellor Prof Sivasish Biswas said that construction of a 100-bed boys hostel will start soon, and tender for a girls hostel has been accepted by the university authority.

Biswas said that a Rs 123-crore plan has been submitted to Assam University Vice Chancellor Prof Dilip Chandra Nath for construction of laboratories for Physics, Geography, Life Science and Anthropology.

Once the issue is settled, work will be on track for extension of the science building. A conference hall will also come up for all types of seminars. For the convenience of the teachers, staff quarters will also be constructed soon. But a proposal for a sports complex has been put on hold for the time being due to lack of fund, he said.

Biswas said that suggestions for construction of separate buildings for Assamese, English, History, Political Science, Commerce and Hindi departments have been put forward.
