Fresh floods hit South West Garo Hills

TURA, July 17 - Despite rains easing across Meghalaya, South West Garo Hills (SWGH) has become the latest district with 25,000 people affected by the rising waters. While floods were declared in West Garo Hills on Sunday, SWGH was affected a day after.

The total number of affected people by the current deluge has risen to 1.55 lakh in the region.

About 40 villages in SWGH with a population of 25,142 people in the Mahendraganj region of Zikzak development block have been affected. Most of those affected are now taking shelter in relief camps.

SWGH Deputy Commissioner, Ram Kumar Singh confirmed that there are 15,000 people in the relief camps. He also stated that relief of five days and tarpaulin sheets are being provided to the affected families.

Incessant rains for over 10 days have caused floods in Phulbari and Rajabala plains of West Garo Hills district.

As many as 26 relief camps have been opened at various schools in and around Mahendraganj area.
