SILCHAR, Nov 21 - Fresh chaos erupted at the Assam University here today after the students staged a day-long protest against the alleged molestation of a student of the Department of Visual Arts on September 30 by Raja Singh, a peon of the same department.
Students in large numbers shouted slogans all day and demanded action against Debashish Chakraborty, president of the Assam University Non-Teaching Employees Association (AUNTEA) for offering tacit support to the accused.
After the incident, the accused was arrested. But he is now moving around freely after being supported by some insiders of the university. The non-teaching staff of the department have not joined their duties since the incident. The HOD was pressurised to sign the attendance sheet of the absentee employees, which is unfortunate, the protesting students echoed. They also demanded that in many departments classes of some subjects were not held, which is now a major cause of concern for the students ahead of the semester exams.
The students therefore appealed to the administration to postpone the examinations till February 2017 so that the students can attend the classes of those subjects before sitting for the examination.
Meanwhile, reacting to the situation, Prof Dilip Chandra Nath, Vice Chancellor of Assam University said, the case is subjudice and inquiries are in progress.
He assured the students that exams of those departments in which classes were not held shall be postponed and new dates shall be announced at a later time.
