Freedom fighters feted on Gandhi Jayanti

GUWAHATI, Oct 3 - The Asom Rajyik Mukti Jujaru Sanmilan and the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) jointly organised a programme to pay tribute to the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti and inauguration of the Swatantra Senani Bhawan at Rupnagar on October 2.

State Revenue Minister Bhumidhar Barman and GMDA Chairperson Dhiren Baruah jointly inaugurated the Swatantra Senani Bhawan and paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi and other freedom fighters who relentlessly worked for the freedom of the country.

The building has been constructed by the GMDA under the aegis of the State government.

More than 350 freedom fighters from different corners of the State took part in the programme. Seventy of them were felicitated with cheleng chador, gamosa and sorai.

Along with Bhumidhar Barman and Dhiren Baruah, president of the association Jatin Goswami also took part in the felicitation ceremony. GMDA CEO Anurag Singh was also felicitated on the occasion. Barman announced that the families of the freedom fighters would soon get identity cards.

Veteran freedom fighters Leela Bora (96) of Tinsukia, Purnakanta Chutiya (94) of Golaghat, Michele Das (88) of Gahpur and Himashree Bhuyan (85) of Golaghat among others took part in the programme, said a statement issued by the the association.
