Freedom fighters demand Anna rally at Judges� Field

GUWAHATI, April 29 � Five freedom fighters have made a demand for granting permission to hold the proposed May 3 anti-corruption rally of Gandhian Anna Hazare at the Judges� Field.

In a statement, freedom fighters Kamakhya Prasad Das, Padma Hazarika, Jatin Goswami, Krishna Sarma and Hiteswar Barthakur have said that the Judges� Field belongs to the people and it is not a property of any individual.

The freedom fighters of the city hoisted the National Tri-colour near this field on January 26, 1930. This tradition of using this field by the people has continued till April 14 this year on which date the All Assam Students� Union (AASU) held the open Bihu function at this ground, said the freedom fighters.

Moreover, they said, there is a court verdict in favour of holding public meetings at the Judges� Field.

Meanwhile, the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba-Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) has made an appeal to the people of the State to intensify the fight against corruption. But at the same time, it rued, the problems facing the State and the NE region as a whole are not treated with the right earnest at the national level.

The issues like the unabated influx, right of the indigenous peoples over the land resources of the region, flood and erosion and even the imposition of the anti-people black Act the Armed Forces (Special Power) Act in the region has not been able to draw the attention of the leaders at the national level, said the AJYCP with a plea that these issues should be taken up seriously by the leaders like Anna Hazare.
