MANGALDAI, Dec 21 � Veteren freedom fighter, president of the Darrang District Freedom Fighters� Association Rupkanta Deka passed away last night following a cardiac arrest at his Santipur residence here. He was 88.
Born at Rongamati village under Mangaldai police station in 1923, Rupkanta Deka actively took part in the freedom movement and faced imprisonment several times. The Indian Government offered him the prestigious �Tamra pattra� and freedom fighter pension as a mark of respect for his contribution towards the freedom movement.
He was also actively associated in establishing different social organisations like Santipur Girls ME and High School, Bezpara LP school, Bezpara Bharati Library etc. He was also known for his literary works which is reflected in his two books Amar Bapuji and Buniyadi Sikshar Prasar and many other articles published in different newspapers and magazines.
During 1964-65 he was regularly associated with the newspaper Natun Asomiya as a journalist.He was associated in uplift of the Village Defence Party in the district and till his death he was holding the post of president in the Darrang district VDP.
Kumud Chandra Kalita, Deputy Commissioner, Darrang, Hiren Kumar Das, MLA, Mangaldai and representatives of many public organisations like Darrang District Freedom Fighters Association, Darrang District Senior Citizen Forum,Crystal Vision, Mangaldai, Red Cross Society, Mangaldai paid last respect to the freedom fighter and social worker. He leaves behind his wife, five sons, two daughters and a host of relatives and well wishers.
