Freedom fighter Kiang Nangbah�s statue unveiled

SHILLONG, March 30 - A statue of freedom fighter U Kiang Nangbah was unveiled on Tuesday at the New Deputy Commissioner�s Office Campus at Khliehriat, East Jaintia Hills.

J Dkhar, MLA and Parliamentary Secretary, while addressing the people, lauded the All Jaintia Youth Welfare Organisation for their initiative to erect the statue.

He said the purpose of erection of the statue is not only to publicise the work and achievement of the freedom fighter but also to inculcate in the minds of the school students the patriotic and heroic deeds of Kiang Nangbah.

H Bamon, Chairman, Meghalaya Transport Corporation, in his address said �U Kiang Nangbah is the pride of the Jaintias who fought against the British soldiers to safeguard the cultural identity and the rights of the people.�

He also reminded that Kiang Nangbah was hanged on December 30, 1862 at Jowai, three days after he was arrested.
