By Correspondent

BONGAIGAON, June 24 - Food and Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Minister Phani Bhusan Choudhury inaugurated a free dialysis centre under the Pradhan Mantri National Dialysis Programme at Bongaigaon Civil Hospital here on Sunday.

The centre, run by technicians trained by Apollo Hospital, will provide facility for dialysis, laboratory tests and required medicines to the poor and economically weak patients suffering from renal diseases. Free and special ambulance service will be introduced to transport the patients, National Health Missions Executive Director Dr Achyut Baishya said.

In his address, Dr Baishya also said that if any hospital records high number of delivery with caesarean section, it is not a good sign for that hospital. Also, increased number of Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) cases recorded in a hospital indicates the failure of family planning, he said.

According to Dr Baishya, when private clinical laboratories are opened near any hospital, it means the hospital has failed to provide proper laboratory services to its patients.

Minister Choudhury in his address sought public cooperation to run the dialysis centre successfully and called the Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) to put their best and honest effort to bring the poor patients to the dialysis centre. He also expressed the hope of getting an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in the hospital by December next.

Deputy Commissioner Adil Khan said that the dialysis centre will provide service from 9-30 am daily, except on Sundays and a total of 18 such centres have been opened in the state till date.

Joint Director of Health Services Dr Ratna Basumatary in his opening address said the need of such dialysis centres has been increasing considering the growing number of renal failure patients.

Dr PK Ray subsequently extended the vote of thanks at the end of the inaugural meeting in which Ananta Kumar Malo, AIUDF legislator from Abhayapuri South constituency, Bongaigaon Superintendent of Police Subodh Kumar Sonowal, North Salmara Sub Divisional Officer Meghnidhi Dahal, ADC Dhrubajyoti Das, NHM DPM Smita Ray Chakravarty and DME Pompi Kalita were present.
