BISWANATH CHARIALI, Dec 21 - There is a good news for the States senior citizens and women.

Senior citizens and women of Assam will soon be able to travel by special buses of the Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC), free of cost.

The ASTC will start the service in Guwahati in the first phase from January. Senior citizens and women from other cities of Assam will also be able to avail the service phasewise.

ASTC chairman Ashok Bhattarai stated that preparations for inauguration of the service have already been made. The colour of these buses will be pink. Bhattarai said senior citizens and women, as soon as they see the striking colour from a distance, would know there is a free travel option for them.

Meanwhile, the chairman inaugurated a new bus service at the ASTC bus station here. The Bharat Benz bus service of the ASTC will be operated between Biswanath Chariali and Guwahati.

Speaking on the occasion, he said that after Guwahati, a second electric bus charging station is being constructed at Biswanath Chariali and the service will be started at the beginning of the new year.

To reduce traffic jams in this town due to the presence of different types of vehicles, parking arrangements would also be made in the vacant land at the ASTC bus stand here, he added.

He further said that within a month, about 350 buses will be procured and transported to different parts of Assam.
