Fourth edition of Hemkosh released

By

GUWAHATI, March 30 The fourth edition of Hemkosh, the first Assamese etymological dictionary, was released by Assam Sahitya Sabha president Rong Bong Terang at the Guwahati Press Club today.

Several thousand new words have been included in the latest edition of the dictionary, published by Hemkosh Prakashan. The latest edition has been edited and published by Devananda Baruah.

Releasing the edition, Rong Bong Terang spoke highly on the role of Hemkosh in his literary works and urged budding writers to inculcate the habit of reading the dictionary to gain command over the language.

I am honoured that I have been asked to release the fourth edition of the dictionary, which I have been following very closely, Terang said. I think there would hardly be any writer who could deny an important role of Hemkosh in his or her life, he said.

Terming Hemkosh as the base of Assamese language, Terang urged the people to be really particular about spellings. I hope and pray that the latest edition, like the previous ones, would benefit people, especially the younger generation, he asserted.

Devananda Baruah, while speaking on the occasion, recalled the contributions of Hem Chandra Baruah and expressed his gratitude to people who have contributed towards bringing out Hemkosh.
