Four killed in Meghalaya landslide

SHILLONG, June 14 � A landslide caused death of four people, with two others injured, in East Jaintia Hills district on Saturday evening.

The mishap occurred on National Highway 44 causing the deaths and injuries, police said. The landslide occurred at Ratacherra, close to Meghalaya-Assam border. There has been incessant rains over the past 48 hours in the area.

The dead have been identified as D Pohshna (45), P Pohshna (23), Everyone Najiar (61) and D Amse (45). Ram Gupta and S Lyngdoh were injured in the incident and are recuperating in the hospital.

Some houses in the area were washed away following the torrential rains.

Due to the landslide the National Highway was blocked and a number of vehicles were stranded. The road is a vital link between Meghalaya and Assam�s Barak valley, Cachar, Mizoram and parts of Manipur.

Overnight the road was cleared with the use of heavy machinery and vehicular movement has begun today.

PTI adds: The killed include three women, police said. �As per information received, four passengers of a vehicle travelling through Ratacherra have died in the landslip,� Police said.

He said that six persons in the vehicle halted on the side of road and were sipping tea at a tea stall located behind a hill when the landslip took place at around 4.30 pm at Rattacherra village.

The two injured � identified as Ram Gupta, father of P Pohshna, who died in the incident and S Lyngdoh � were rescued and taken to a hospital by the BSF, he said.

At least four houses in the area were also washed away in the incident when the landmass caved due to incessant rain in the past 48 hours, he said. � PTI
