Four arrested in tax evasion conspiracy case

GUWAHATI, April 13 - A day after it had registered a case against two Income Tax officers and a few other accused, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) today arrested Commissioner of Income Tax (Audit) Dr Swetabh Suman, Income Tax Officer (Audit) Pratap Das, advocate Ramesh Goenka and Pranjal Sarma, who carried the cash, for entering into a conspiracy related to tax evasion.

The CBI is yet to arrest Amit Goenka, who has also been named in the FIR, for indulging in a conspiracy to evade a huge amount of tax. While Suman was arrested from Delhi, the others were arrested from Jorhat and Guwahati.

They were produced before the CJM Court, Kamrup (Metro) which remanded them in CBI custody for three days.

In 2017-18, Suman, Commissioner of Income Tax (Audit), Guwahati, with additional charge of Jorhat, conspired with Pratap Das, IT Officer (Audit), Guwahati, and the other accused, to show favour to Suresh Agarwalla, director of a private firm, by passing a favourable order in an appeal arising out of assessment done in respect of one of the shell companies owned by Agarwalla.
