Foundation stone of hospital laid

GUWAHATI, May 2 � Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today laid the foundation stone of a district hospital for Kamrup (Metro) at Sonapur on the outskirts of the city, an official release said.

Speaking at a function organised on the occasion Chief Minister Gogoi said that the Government has all along laid emphasis on two key sectors � health and education.

Gogoi said that the Government would give added thrust to the health sector in the coming days and would constantly endeavour to bring quality health care within the reach of the poor and needy segments of the society in every nook and cranny of the State. He, further hoped that the district hospital would cater to the local people as well as the surrounding areas.

Addressing the gathering Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Dr Himanta Biswa Sharma said that the government plans to set up a hospital in every district with focus on the rural areas and this year foundation stone of two district hospital one between Naharkatiya and Namrup and the other at Majuli would be laid. Dr Sharma said the three-storeyed 200-bed hospital with provision for another 100-beds for Kamrup (Metro) would be completed by December 2011.

He said the slew of initiatives taken by the Government has brought about a sea change in the health sector, thanks to the vigorous implementation of NRHM in the State. He said the Government would leave no stone unturned to achieve the avowed goal of health for all. The total infrastructure cost of the district hospital for Kamrup (Metro) funded by NRHM, Assam is to the tune of Rs 1693 lakh besides Rs 400 lakh for equipment and other accessories.

The function was attended among others, by Minister for Social Welfare, Akon Bora, Deputy Commissioner, Kamrup (Metro), Prateek Hajela and Managing Director, NRHM, Assam JB Ekka, the release added.
