Foundation of Meghalaya zoo

SHILLONG, Oct 1 - Chief Minister Conrad Sangma today laid the foundation stone of the proposed State zoo at Umtrew in Ri Bhoi district. The zoo will be developed on a 72-hectare plot of land.

Speaking on the occasion, Sangma stressed the importance of biodiversity, adding that the State is blessed with diverse flora and fauna. The Chief Minister rued that some people still go for hunting animals and hoped that the zoo would help change the mindset of these people and underline the importance of biodiversity. The Government is hopeful that the zoo works would be completed by 2022.
