Foundation of Lakhimpur Medical College laid

NORTH LAKHIMPUR, Feb 20 � Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi laid the foundation stone of Lakhimpur Medical College in North Lakhimpur today.

He laid the foundation stone at the compound of North Lakhimpur Civil Hospital in Chaboti, North Lakhimpur at 2 pm today in the presence of some of his Cabinet colleagues, local dignitaries and public. A public meeting was held on the occasion where the local MLA, Ghana Buragohain, Lakhimpur MP, Dr Ranee Narah, and State Minister for Cultural Affairs Bharat Narah were present.

The foundation laying ceremony was also attended by State Health Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sharma.

Speaking on the occasion, Gogoi said that the establishment of a medical college in Lakhimpur was a longstanding demand of the people of the area and this day�s foundation of the same would mark the beginning of a new era in the backward district.

The Chief Minister also spoke about all the developmental programmes taken up by his government, the fruits of which are now being enjoyed by the public. Dr Himanta Biswa Sharma, who had made the announcement of setting up of a medical college in Lakhimpur in January, said that the medical college would cater to the needs of the people of Lakhimpur district.

Earlier, Lakhimpur MLA Ghana Buragohain delivered the welcome address of the meeting, where he appreciated the initiatives taken by the Health Minister in revolutionising the health scenario in Assam.
