Foundation of College of Fisheries laid

GUWAHATI, May 12 � Dr S Ayyappan, the Director General of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research and Education, Government of India, laid the foundation stone of the second campus of the College of Fisheries under the Assam Agricultural University at Kachamari near Nagaon town covering an area of about 250 bighas of land recently, a press release said. The college is the seventh such professional college in the country which was established in 1988 under the Assam Agricultural University.

Dr KM Bujarbaruah, vice chancellor, Assam Agricultural University, Dr Arvind Kumar, DDG (Education), PK Borthakur, Commissioner & Secretary, Fisheries Department, Assam, Dr S Angamuthu, DC, Nagaon, I Haque, Director of Fisheries, Assam, Dr KK Kalita, i/c Associate Dean, College of Fisheries, Raha and hundreds of teachers and scientists from different campuses of the Assam Agricultural University joined the foundation stone laying function.

Besides, officers from the State administration, students and members of the public participated in the programme. In his inaugural address, Dr Bujarbaruah welcomed the dignitaries and guests and assured world-class infrastructure and ultra-modern technology in the new college campus.

Dr Ayyappan, DG, ICAR, briefed on the importance of fishery education and its future prospects in the country. Borthakur, Commissioner & Secretary, explained the role played by the College of Fisheries, Raha in the overall development of the fisheries sector in the State and called for cooperation in the near future to boost the blue revolution in the State.

Dr Angamuthu, DC, Nagaon expressed the hope that in the near future, the college would be transformed into a fisheries university, the release added.
