Foundation day of Tiwa solidarity forum held

By CORRESPONDENT

MORIGAON, Aug 19 - The 3rd foundation day of Tiwa Jatiya Oikya Mancha (Tiwa National Solidarity Forum) was observed here at Morigaon town on Thursday with a daylong colourful programme.

The programme started with the flag hoisting by Khagen Chandra Bordoloi, president, TJOM followed by smriti tarpan by Promode Deka Doloi, vice president, TJOM. More than 7000 people from different parts of Morigaon, Nagaon and Kamrup (East) districts took part in the open meeting held on the occasion at Morigaon Bihutoli.

Addressing the gathering, Rama Kanta Deori, founder president of TJOM and MLA, Morigaon said that the encroachment of land by the illegal Bangladeshis in central Assam is the burning problem of the State. Referring to his role in the last session of the Assam Legislative Assembly, Deori said that he only asked the Congress MLA Sherman Ali as to why he advocated for the Bangladeshis on the floor of the House with reference to Sipajhar MLA Binanda Saikias question. But now, Deori himself was threatened by several quarters with dire consequences, he added. Even fundamentalist forces have threatened him asking him not to put up any questions pertaining to any matter about illegal Bangladeshis, he said.

He said that the vacant land of tribal belt and blocks of central Assam were occupied by illegal infiltrators threatening the very existence of the indigenous people. He asked the Government to take drastic action to free the Government land from the clutches of the illegal Bangladeshis.

Vehemently criticising the Nagaon MP who is also the Union Minister of State for Railways, Rajen Gohain, Deori said that the former played dirty politics dividing the Tiwa people during the formation of the Tiwa Autonomous Council. Deori alleged that at the behest of Rajen Gohain, only three members of TJOM backed by 13 Congress members are trying to form the Tiwa Autonomous Council which was a sign of clear interference from Gohain.

Speaking on the occasion Naba Doley, Minister, Panchayat and Rural Development said the BJP-led State Government has taken up some schemes for the all round development of the tribal people.

Addressing the gathering, former Chief Minister, Prafulla Kumar Mahanta extended his thanks and gratitude to Tiwa Jatiya Oikya Mancha (TJOM) for its role in promoting unity and integrity among the various tribes of central Assam.

In the open meeting, the TJOM members urged Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal to include Rama Kanta Deori as Cabinet Minister in next Cabinet expansion.
